Garner's Chinaman ROM

The Most Successful ROM Sire in ADBA History

Origins and Breeding

Garner's Chinaman ROM stands as the most celebrated stud dog in the history of the American Dog Breeders Association (ADBA). Bred by Gary Garner in the United States, Chinaman was the product of a careful cross of the finest working APBT bloodlines of his era — combining the legendary GR CH Jeep ROM on his sire's side with the Honeybunch family on his dam's side.

This combination proved to be one of the most genetically productive in the breed's history. Chinaman himself earned his ROM (Register of Merit) designation — awarded by the ADBA to dogs who sire or produce a defined number of Grand Champions — and did so with a consistency that set a record that has never been equalled.

Physical Characteristics

Chinaman was known for producing dogs of exceptional athletic conformation: lean, dense muscle structure, well-sprung ribs, and what breeders describe as "tremendous chest capacity." Dogs carrying heavy Chinaman blood are typically medium-sized (35–55 lbs), with a characteristic broadness of head and a tight, short coat. The bloodline tends to throw predominantly brindle and buckskin colourations, though it produces the full range of APBT colours.

Temperamentally, Chinaman offspring became famous for an intense drive and focus combined with a high degree of human affection — a combination that made them exceptional athletes and loyal companions.

Legacy and Influence

Chinaman's influence on the modern APBT cannot be overstated. His sons and daughters spread across the United States and internationally during the 1980s and 1990s, becoming the foundation of dozens of respected breeding programs. Dogs carrying his name appear in the extended pedigrees of the majority of ADBA-registered APBTs alive today.

The Chinaman bloodline became especially prominent in combination with OFRN (Old Family Red Nose) genetics, a cross that many breeders considered the ideal working-dog pairing of the era. Chinaman × Redboy and Chinaman × Bolio crosses were replicated by breeders worldwide who sought to reproduce his exceptional produce record.

ROM Classification

The ADBA's Register of Merit (ROM) is awarded to dogs who produce a defined number of ADBA Grand Champions. Achieving ROM status requires exceptional genetic quality — the sire's offspring must consistently win at the highest levels of ADBA competition. Chinaman's ROM record is the most outstanding in the registry's history, a testament to the depth and consistency of his genetic contribution to the breed.

Chinaman in Modern Pedigrees

In the apbt.gr database, dogs with significant Chinaman blood are identified by bloodline percentage on their profile pages. A dog with 25%+ Chinaman blood carries at least one grandparent of direct Chinaman lineage; dogs at 50%+ are typically line-bred back to his sons or daughters. The bloodline analysis feature on apbt.gr traces Chinaman's presence across up to 7 generations of any registered dog's pedigree.
