Bolio Bloodline

CH Bolio ROM — Foundation of the Redboy/Bolio Cross

Origins and Breeding

CH Bolio ROM is one of the most celebrated foundation sires in the history of the American Pit Bull Terrier. Bred and owned by the Lambert family, Bolio earned his Champion designation through outstanding individual performance and his ROM (Register of Merit) through consistently exceptional produce — hallmarks of a truly great APBT sire.

Bolio's pedigree drew on some of the finest Old Family bloodlines of the mid-20th century. His dam-side connections to OFRN (Old Family Red Nose) genetics gave him a direct line to some of the oldest verified APBT strains in America, while his sire-side brought more modern working-dog crosses.

Physical Characteristics

Bolio dogs are typically described as compact and exceptionally hard-muscled, ranging from 35 to 50 lbs. The bloodline is known for producing dogs with exceptional bone density relative to their size — giving them a dense, powerful feel that belies their athleticism. The head tends to be broad with a strong jaw, and the overall impression is of concentrated power.

The bloodline throws a variety of colours, with red and red brindle being common due to the OFRN influence in the background. Temperamentally, Bolio dogs are known for extreme determination and focus — traits that made them outstanding performers and highly valued by serious breeders.

The Redboy/Bolio Cross

The combination of Redboy (OFRN) and Bolio genetics became one of the most famous pairings in modern APBT breeding history. Breeders discovered that the cross of these two related but distinct strains generated offspring with exceptional working ability and a remarkable degree of physical soundness. The Redboy/Bolio cross was widely replicated throughout the 1970s and 1980s and is still popular today.

Dogs from this cross carry a high proportion of Old Family genetics — both Redboy and Bolio trace back to the original Irish/OFRN imports — making them some of the purest representations of the historic working APBT phenotype in the modern era.

Bolio in the Modern APBT

The Bolio bloodline remains active in the pedigrees of performance-bred APBTs worldwide. Its influence was amplified further by the many great sons and daughters Bolio produced, several of whom became influential sires and dams in their own right. The apbt.gr database documents dogs with verifiable Bolio ancestry, with bloodline percentages computed across up to 7 generations using Wright's method.
