Tudor's Dibo Bloodline

Will Tudor's Kentucky Dogs — A Refined Old Strain

Origins and History

The Tudor bloodline takes its name from Will Tudor of Kentucky, one of the most respected APBT breeders of the early-to-mid 20th century. The centrepiece of Tudor's programme was a dog known as Dibo, whose genetic influence spread through Tudor's careful breeding to establish one of the most distinctive and refined strains in the breed's history.

Tudor's dogs traced their lineage to some of the oldest verified APBT bloodlines in America — connecting back through several generations to the early Kentucky and Virginia fighting-dog culture that preceded even the formal ADBA registration system. Tudor was meticulous in his records and conservative in his outcrosses, maintaining a high degree of genetic consistency within his strain.

Physical Characteristics

Tudor/Dibo dogs are recognised for exceptional refinement and balance — many breeders and historians consider the Tudor strain to represent the most aesthetically refined expression of the APBT phenotype in its era. They tend toward the lighter end of the breed's weight range, typically 30 to 45 lbs, with a characteristically fine but dense bone structure, well-laid-back shoulders, and a long, reaching stride.

The head in Tudor dogs tends to be slightly longer and more refined than some other strains — strong and powerful but without the extreme broadness of Eli-influenced dogs. The coat is consistently short and glossy, and the dogs carry themselves with a characteristic alertness and elegance that set them apart from heavier-bodied strains.

Influence on the Breed

Tudor's Dibo was one of the most widely used outcross sires of the mid-20th century. Breeders seeking to add refinement, sound structure, and what they called "the old-style look" to their programmes frequently incorporated Tudor blood. The strain was especially valued for correcting structural faults in heavier, coarser bloodlines — its influence on type and conformation quality was disproportionate to its numbers.

The Tudor × Colby cross was one of the classic pairings of the era, combining two of the oldest refined strains in the breed. The Tudor × Carver cross similarly combined two programmes that prioritised athletic quality and structural soundness over raw size.

Tudor Dogs Today

Pure Tudor/Dibo bloodlines are among the rarest in the modern APBT world — the strain's refinement and relatively small numbers made it vulnerable to dilution as the breed's population exploded in the latter 20th century. Dogs with verified Tudor ancestry are considered historically significant in the pedigree community. The apbt.gr database documents Tudor bloodline percentages across up to 7 generations.
