Colby's APBT Bloodline
America's Oldest Continuously Bred APBT Strain — Est. 1889
Origins and History
The Colby bloodline is the oldest continuously bred strain of American Pit Bull Terrier in the United States. Founded by John P. Colby of Newburyport, Massachusetts, in 1889, the Colby family maintained their breeding program for over a century — an uninterrupted legacy unmatched by any other APBT family in history.
John Colby imported his original stock directly from Ireland and England, drawing on the finest fighting dogs of the era. He was meticulous in his selection, keeping records of every pairing and culling ruthlessly for quality. His son Louis Colby continued the program after John's death, preserving the bloodline's distinctive characteristics well into the modern era.
Physical Characteristics
Colby dogs are renowned for their classic, balanced APBT conformation — considered by many historians to be the closest living representation of the original type. They tend to be compact and athletic, typically ranging from 30 to 50 lbs, with deep chests, well-muscled hindquarters, and a characteristic smooth, short coat. The bloodline throws a wide range of colours, though brindle and fawn are common.
The Colby head is distinctive: broad, with a well-defined stop and strong, blunt muzzle. The expression is alert and confident — what old-time breeders called "the look of eagles." Temperamentally, Colby dogs are known for exceptional human sociability combined with the intense gameness that defined the breed's working heritage.
Influence on the Modern APBT
Because of the bloodline's age and purity, Colby genetics appear throughout the pedigrees of virtually every other major APBT bloodline. Both the Jeep and Honeybunch families trace ancestry to Colby foundation stock. When breeders in the 20th century sought to improve their programs, a Colby cross was often the first choice — the bloodline's genetic consistency and typiness made it a reliable outcross for almost any program.
Louis Colby remained an active voice in the APBT community until his death in 2003. His book Colby's Book of the American Pit Bull Terrier, co-written with Richard Stratton, remains one of the definitive texts on the breed's history and conformation standards.
Colby Dogs in the ADBA
The Colby kennel produced numerous ADBA Champions and Grand Champions over the decades. Their breeding records, spanning over 100 years, represent a unique historical resource for the breed. Dogs of verified Colby descent are identifiable in the apbt.gr database through the bloodline percentage analysis feature, which traces Colby ancestry across up to 7 generations of any registered dog's pedigree.
